Vitreoretinal Surgery for Intraocular Foreign Body
Hülya GÜNGEL
Beyoğlu Göz Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi 4. Göz Klinik Şefi, İstanbul, Prof. Dr. Intraocular foreign body can be seen with perforating and penetrating trauma. The ´properties of intraocular foreign body, time of trauma and examination results affect the treatment approach of the operator. The chemical structure, surface area, bluntness or sharpness and also the nature of the body correlate with the prognosis and technic of the surgery. The importance of the factors that affect. The time of the vitreoretinal surgery is known. The acute (first 24-48 hour) complications related with foreign body are due to contusion, penetration and toxic effects of the foreign body. Subacute complications (7-14 days) are seen in the time of improvement of intraocular tissues. Late ( after 1 month) complications are due to ongoing fibrocellular proliferation and tractions related with the myofibroblastic activity of fibroblasts contraction. The length and the localization of the scar give information about the loss of kinetic energy into the eye and whether the foreign body touches to the retina. After 14 days surgery is not recommended. The steps of the surgery are application of silicone bonde, extraction of the lens, pars plana vitrectomy and extraxtion of the foreign body. Keywords : Intraocular foreign body, vitreoretinal surgery
