Osmangazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları AD., Eskişehir Purpose: To evaluate the short term intraocular pressure (IOP) changes after intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide (4mg/0.1ml).

Materials and Methods: The study included 20 eyes of 20 patients with diffuse diabetic macular edema (14 eyes), exudative age related macular degeneration (5 eyes), psuedophacic cystoid macular edema (1 eye) who received an intravitreal injection of 4 mg/0.1 triamcinolone acetonide. The IOPs before injection were recorded by Tonopen XL. IOP was measured 30 minutes, 2 hours, 3 hours, 5 hours and 1 week after the injection. The relationship between the changes of IOP and time were evaluated by two-way ANOVA

Results: Mean age of the patients was 61.7±6.9. Mean IOP was 18.3±2.8 mm Hg before the injection. IOP was 18.1 ± 3.6 mm Hg on 30th minutes, 19.1 ± 2.9 mmHg on 2nd hours, 18.5± 3.4 mm Hg on 5th hours and 17.3 ± 2.4 mm Hg on 1st week after the injection. The difference between the mean pre-injection IOP and the mean post-injections IOP in different times was not statistically significant. (p>0.05)

Conclusion: After intravitreal injections of 4 mg/0.1 ml of triamcinolone acetonide, marked elevations in IOP are not seen in short term. Anterior chamber paracentesis is not necessary after the injections. Keywords : triamcinolone, intravitreal injection, intraocular pressure.
