Purpose: To investigate the results of Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV) for removal of retained lens materials as a complication of phacoemulsification surgery.

Materials and Methods: Thirty eyes of 30 patients who underwent PPV between May 2001-May 2003 were investigated. Preoperative and postoperative visual acuities were compared. Complications were noted and factors associated with increase in visual acuity were investigated.

Results: Mean best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.11 ± 0.22 preoperatively and it was 0.22 ± 0.31 at the last visit. The difference was statistically significant (p=0.015). Decrease in intraocular pressure after PPV was also statistically significant (p=0.033). Visual acuity was decreased significantly in patients having preoperative retinal detachment (p=0.03) and pale optic disc (p=0.049) at the last examination.

Conclusion: Pars Plana Vitrectomy for removal of retained lens material during phacoemulsification has significant impact on decreasing intraocular pressure and increasing BCVA. But retinal detachment and optic nerve damage deteriorate prognosis.

Keywords : Phacoemulsification, retained lens material in vitreous, pars plana vitrectomy.
