Purpose: To evaluate the indication variety of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) in the geriatric age group and to analyze the anatomical and functional outcome.

Material and Methods: The medical records of 152 eyes that underwent PPV were retrospectively reviewed. The baseline characteristics and anatomical and functional outcomes were analyzed. The surgical indications were grouped and evaluated individually. Additionally, the patients over 80 years old were evaluated and com-pared with the younger geriatric group.

Results: The most common indication for PPV was RD (42.4%). The single operation success rate was 74.3%, and after further operations, the fi nal anatomic success rate was 86.8%. The difference of preoperative best cor-rected visual acuity (BCVA) (2,1±0,54 logMar) and the fi nal BCVA (1,29±0,77 logMar) was statistically signif-icant. Visual acuity of 20/200 or better was achieved in 51.3% of the cases. There was no statistically signifi cant difference between the super geriatric and younger geriatric groups according to the anatomical and functional success rates.

Conclusion: Pars plana vitrectomy, has favorable prognosis in both super geriatric and younger geriatric groups. Keywords : Pars plana vitrectomy, geriatry, retinal detachment
