Etiology and Risc Factors in the Retinal Artery and Vein Branch Occlusion

Central retinal artery occlussion incidance is 1/10.000 amoung the patients visiting ophthalmologist. It is more common in males (Male /female 2/1) and more frequent around 6th decade. Embolus is seen in 2/3 of branch retinal artery occlusion and in 1/3 of central retinal artery occlusion. Retinal venous occlussive diseases are one of the most frequently seen retinal disease. Retinal vein occlusion incidance is 2.14/1000 over the 40 years age and; 5.36/1000 over the 64 years age in 4 years follow up. Retinal vein branch occlusion is second most common retinal vascular disease after diabetic retinopathy. 60% of the retinal vein occlussion patients have systemic hyper tension. Central retinal venous occlusion in patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease were much higher than the normal population.
