Pars Plana Vitrectomy Results in Vitreomacular Traction Syndrome

Purpose: Aim of this study is to evaluate the results of 23 G pars plana vitrectomy surgical results in the treatment of the vitreomacular traction syndrome with diabetes mellitus.

Materıals and Methods: Twenty two eyes of twenty patients who were operated with 23 G microincisional vitrectomy for the treatment of VMT syndrome with diabetes mellitus were reviewed. All patients' preoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed VMT. Patients' preoperative and postoperative visual acuity, results of preoperative and postoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) and the complications of the surgery retrospectively.

Results: Patients' preoperative visual acuities were ranging from at least 50 cmps up to 0.5 with Snellen chart. At baseline median OCT macular thickness was 385 μm. Patients' results were evaluated at the 12th month postoperatively. All patients' OCT macular thickness decreased and measured median thickness was 257 μm. Visual acuity of ten eyes were stable but patients who had complaints of metamorphopsia, described visual relief. Eight eyes showed an increase of visual acuity by the Snellen chart at least 1, up to 4 lines. Four eyes showed at least 1, up to 2 lines decrease of visual acuity by the Snellen chart.

Conclusion: All patients had anatomic improvement after PPV surgery in diabetes-related VMT, although functional outcome was not always the desired level. Keywords : Vitreomacular traction syndrome, pars plana vitrectomy, optical coherence tomography
