Results of Iris-Claw Intraocular Lens Implantation Combined with Pars Plana Vitrectomy at the Same Session for the Extraction of Lenses Luxated Into the Vitreous

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of iris-claw intraocular lens (IOL) implantation at the same session combined with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for the extraction of luxated lenses into the vitreous due to phacoemulsification surgery.
Materials and Methods: 10 eyes of 10 patients that underwent pars plana vitrectomy and iris-claw IOL implantation at the same session were included in this retrospective study. Uncorrected and best corrected visual acuities, biomicroscopic and fundoscopic findings, intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements, and surgical complications were evaluated retrospectively.
Results: Six patients were male and four patients were female. The mean age was 65.10±11.68 (54-87) years. The average time of follow up was 8.10±2.7 (6-12) months. At the final examination 9 (90%) eyes showed at least three snellen lines improvement in the visual acuity. At the postoperative period, cystoid macular edema (n=1), transient IOP increase (n=2), and pupil ovalization (n=1) occured.
Conclusion: Iris-claw IOL implantation combined with PPV at the same session for the luxated lenses into the vitreous can be used safely for the treatment of aphakia. However, large series of prospective randomized studies are needed to clarify this type of IOLs for the their effectiveness for the treatment of aphakia.
