Treatment of Retinal Tumors
A. Kaan GÜNDÜZ
Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Ankara, Prof. Dr. Enucleation and external beam radiotherapy have been the mainstays of treatment in retinoblastoma for many years. Chemoreduction and focal treatments including cryotherapy, transpupillary thermotherapy, and plaque radiotherapy have gained popularity in the recent years as primary treatment for this condition. Enucleation is used in treatment unresponsive eyes and in advanced unilateral cases. EBRT is used in the remaining unresponsive eye of bilateral patients after the first eye has been enucleated. In retinal capillary hemangiomas, cryotherapy for lesions located anterior to the equator and photodynamic therapy for lesions located near the posterior pole are the preferred methods of treatment. In retinal vasoproliferative tumors, cryotherapy is commonly used as the first-line treatment. Plaque radiotherapy is used in treatment resistant cases of retinal capillary hemangioma and retinal vasoproliferative tumor. Vitrectomy and epiretinal membrane peeling can be used in combined hamartomas of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium with modest visual acuity improvement. Keywords : Retinoblastoma, retinal capillary hemangioma, vasoproliferative tumor of the retina, cryotherapy, photodynamic therapy, plaque radiotherapy, enucleation, transpupillary thermotherapy, external radiotherapy
