Pathological myopia is characterised with an elongated eyeball (> 26 mm) and a refractive error greater than -6 diopters. Typically, progression of the axial lenght still continues in the early adulthood. Pathological myopia usually accompanies certain systemic diseases or may be seen solely. Genetic transmission of this disease has been reported before. The mechanical streching of the eyeball affects several tissues including sclera, choroid, retina and the vitreoretinal interface. The impact of the disease is significant for it may lead to irreversibl visual loss. One has to keep in mind that pathological myopes may have retinal pathologies such as retinal detachment, chorioretinal atrophy involving the fovea, foveaschizis, macular hole and myopic choroidal neovascularization. Regular follow-up is extremely important in those relatively young and productive cases, hereby appropriate treatment can be applied and the burden of the disease can be reduced. Keywords : Detachment, chorioretinal atrophy, choroidal neovascularization, pathological myopia, retina
