Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Genetic
Ümit Übeyt İNAN
Kocatepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Afyonkarahisar, Prof. Dr. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remains the largest single cause of severe visual impairment in developed countries. It is one of the best characterized complex trait diseases. Multiple genes and environmental factors play a role in pathogenesis. A number of different biological pathways and related gene polymorphisms are strongly implicated in its etiology. A lot of chromosomal location have been studied to figure out genetic risk factors responsible from the AMD. Many of genetic variants which have been found to be related to AMD at least in one study have not been verified in subsequent studies. However in recent years, single-nucleotide polymorphisms within the complement system and also chromosome 10q26 which may predispose individuals to the susceptibility to AMD have strongly been elicited. Developments in genetic insights may provide better understanding of pathogenesis of AMD as well as better classification and early diagnosis or treatment choices. Keywords : Age-related macular degeneration, genetic
