The Comparision of Macula and Central Cornea Thickness in Eyes with Unilateral Amblyopia

Purpose: To compare the macula and cental cornea thickness (CCT) between amblyopic and normal eyes in patients with unilateral amblyopia.
Material and Method: This study included 28 eyes of 14 patients with unilateral amblyopia with no history of corneal and retinal disease, glaucoma or ocular surgery.The macular thickness was measured by using optic coherens tomography and CCT was measured with ultrasonic pachymeter. Statistical analyses were performed by using Mann-Whitney U and p<0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: Mean macular thickness was 230.36±66.83 in amblyopic eyes and 190.43±57.77 in normal eyes. The macular thickness was greater in amblyopic eyes than normal eyes; but there was no statistically significant difference between amblyopic and normal eyes (p=0.148). Mean CCT was 551.50±27.51 in amblyopic eyes and 547.79±26.98 in normal eyes, and there was no significant difference in respect to the CCT between amblyopic and normal eyes (p=0.629).
Conclusion: The amblyopic process may cause the alterations of macular thickness; but, it can not effect the corneal thickness, and it is not exactly known the results of amblyopia on eye.
