The Effect of Cryotherapy and Laser Phohotocoagulation Therapy in the Treatment of Coats’ Disease

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of cryotherapy and lazer photocoagulation therapy in Coat’s disease.
Materials and Methods: Five eyes of five patients with Coats' disease who had at least 2 years of follow up after their initial evaluation were included in this study. All patients had macular involvement with exudate, two of the 5 patients had subtotal retinal detachment and subretinal fibrosis. Patients with total retinal detachment were excluded. Treatment modalities consisted of cryotherapy with and without indirect diode lazer photocoagulation. Intravitreal bevacizumab injection was performed in one eye.
Results: Five patients were male. At presentation the average age was mean 5.2 years (range 1.2-11 years). The mean number of treatment required was 3 (range 2-4). Four of five eyes achieved anatomic success with complete resolution of the telangiectasis and exudations. Final visual acuity was 2/10 or better in 2 eyes, finger counting in one, hand motion in one and no light perception in one. The mean follow-up was 3.6 years (2.1-4.8 years). One of the treated patients had recurrences.
Conclusions: Cryotherapy and lazer photocoagulation therapy can anatomically improve the eye with Coats’ disease but the visual outcome can be poor. Coats disease can recur so long follow-up period is necessary.
