Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) treatment, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and combination therapy in patients with choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
Material and Methods: This study included a total of 109 eyes of 88 patient with CNV secondary to AMD. We had three groups; PDT monotherapy (group1), intravitreal bevacizumab monotherapy(group 2) and PDT with IVB combination therapy (group 3). Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), lesion types, remission time and macular optical coherence tomography (OCT) results were assessed. Results: The mean age was 69.65±7.98 years, the mean follow-up time was 12 months. 41 eyes of 34 patients in group 1, 32 eyes of 25 patients in group 2, 29 eyes of 36 patients in group 3 were examined. In group 2 the mean BCVA was statistically significant higher at 1 month and 12 months follow-up than pre-treatment values. In group 3 the mean BCVA was statistically significant higher only at 1 month follow-up than pre-treatment values. In group 3 the remission time was statistically significant longer than the other groups. In group 3 the mean treatment number was statistically significant lower than the group 2. Conclusion: IVB treatment seems to be safe, effective and lowcost for the CNV secondary to AMD. For decreasing the number of İVB, the combined therapies are also applied frequently in nowadays. |
